Twitter Confirms Paid Pro Accounts

Labels:

More revenue for Twitter on the way: The company confirms -- for the first time we've seen, at least -- age-old theories that they'll sell commercial accounts to power users or companies using Twitter.

In exchange for a fee, companies could get "more features" on Twitter, the WSJ reports. Twitter cofounder Biz Stone tells the WSJ that the company recently hired a product manager to help develop those accounts, but doesn't specify what the extra features will be or when the accounts will launch.

This makes perfect sense. There's a lot of stuff companies would pay Twitter for, such as a way to verify the company rep's legitimacy; to more analytics and information about who is reading their Twitter page; to better tracking features to see what people are saying about their company.

What would you pay for an account like this? We could see a lot of companies paying $10 or $20 a month for the service, even for simple tools. But we could also see many companies -- Comcast, JetBlue, Starbucks, etc. -- paying more than one hundred dollars per month for really good, insightful tools.

Twitter Turns Three,Growing More Faster

Labels:

Twitter, that ubiquitous little collection of emotional grunts and other 140 character ramblings, is turning 3 years old today at 1:02 PM California time. Founding CEO Jack Dorsey Twittered earlier today linking back to one of the first Twitter messages, which read “inviting coworkers.”

The news about Twitter didn’t break until July 2006, when it was called twttr . I love reading our first post on the service, which I described as “a sort of “group send” SMS application. Each person controls their own network of friends.” I gave it a thumbs up for “for innovation and good execution on a simple but viral idea” but questioned why Odeo, a podcasting company, was wasting time on side projects. The comments to that post are pretty entertaining as well. See what my friend Om Malik had to say about them that day as well.

Fast forward to today and you have a startup that survived serious scaling issues and is getting serious mainstream attention. Facebook is obsessed with the young company, as are many others. Happy Birthday, Twttr.

Twitter Make Text Ads

Labels:

We’re all waiting to see the business model Twitter will roll out and, putting 2 and 2 together, it looks like sidebar ads will be the first to arrive.

Sneaking into the sidebar of Twitter’s homepage are what appear to be small text ads like this:

Right now the "ads" point back to various Twitter pages, but I suspect the micro-blogging service is softening us up for the launch of targeted advertising.

Have you seen the ads? What are you thoughts on Twitter adding text ads to your homepage?

Gather for Twestival

Labels:

On 12 February 2009 175+ cities around the world will be hosting Twestivals which bring together Twitter communities for an evening of fun and to raise money and awareness for charity: water.

n September 2008, a group of Twitterers based in London UK decided to organise an event where the local Twitter community could socialize offline; meet the faces behind the avatars, enjoy some entertainment, have a few drinks and tie this in with a food drive and fundraising effort for a local homeless charity.

In addition to collecting contributions online, Twestival events are using various methods to raise money for charity: water. Some are selling tickets, while others will have free admission and raffle off donated items. Ms. Rose also set up a streaming music site, called Twestival.fm to generate additional donations. Music fans can leave a donation in exchange for listening to songs donated by musicians like the experimental pop chanteuse Imogen Heap, the indie rockers Bloc Party and a Brazilian electro-outfit, Bonde do Role.

No Charging Businesses

Labels:

This week, there’s been a flurry of news about Twitter’s business plans. Okay, so Twitter’s business plans have been the subject of news for months.

However, it's important to note that whatever we come up with, Twitter will remain free to use by everyone—individuals, companies, celebrities, etc. What we're thinking about is adding value in places where we are already seeing traction, not imposing fees on existing services. We are still very early in the idea stage and we don't have anything to share just yet despite a recent surge in speculation. When we do, we'll be sure to let you know.

What Is Twitter

Labels:

What is twitter?Do you konw twitter's history, let Wikipedia tell you.

Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read other users' updates (otherwise known as tweets), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length.

Updates are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends (delivery to everyone being the default). Users can receive updates via the Twitter website, SMS, RSS, or through applications such as TwitterMobile, Tweetie, Twinkle, Twitterrific, Feedalizr, Facebook, and Twidget, a widget application. Four gateway numbers are currently available for SMS: short codes for the United States, Canada, and India, and a United Kingdom-based number for international use. Several third parties offer posting and receiving updates via email. By September 2008, Twitter had 'well over 5 million visitors.'

Twitter messages may be tagged using hashtags, a word or phrase prefixed with a #, such as #beer.
